Warhammer 40k: Darktide launches on November 30 and there has been some confusion about what classes, subclasses or careers that players can expect.

During the Darktide closed beta we have had four classes available, the Veteran Sharpshooter, Zealot Preacher, Ogryn Skullbreaker and the Psyker Psykinetic.

After players got their hands on the closed beta they started asking questions about where the other classes/ subclasses are?

Vermintide 2 used to have 15 careers at launch, therefore players assumed Darktide would have a similiar amount. But that isn't the case, Darktide will launch with 4 classes and that's it.

However players were still confused because in a trailer they could actually see other "subclasses" for Darktide. For example in the video below you could see a "Veteran GRUNT" and a "Psyker Biomancy" subclass.

Did Darktide remove the Subclasses?

So did the devs of Darktide decide to cut content, maybe they didn't have enough time to produce more subclasses or are they going to sell them later after launch?

The trailer above shows a "Veteran Grunt" and a "Psyker BIOMANCY". The most likely thing that happened was they simply changed the name from Veteran Grunt to Veteran Sharpshooter and the Psyker Biomancy to Psyker Psykinetic. When we look at the gamplay in the trailer these classes have the exact same skills that we had in the closed beta.

Therefore it is likely that the game never had more than 4 classes, the names were just changed later in development process.

When do we get more classes in Darktide?

While 4 classes isn't that much you have more weapon diversity at your disposal when playing Darktide. Darktide will start with 4 classes and 70+ weapons. The developers also said in an article that they plan to launch one new class per quarter in Darktide. The post further mentions they haven't decided whether they will charge players for new classes or not. However, in these days it is quite obvious what will happen. Of course it could also be a mix between free and paid characters.

In the post the Darktide developers also mentioned that classes are not the same as careers in Vermintide, but they kind of are. The main difference comes from a deeper narrative experience, greater range and more options in character customization. There is also a wider progression of weapons.

Basically this means you will only see four classes at the Darktide launch but they have more customization and weapon options. However, players still feel a bit cheated because they want new classes/subclasses with different skills and talents. While character customization is great, it shouldn't be part of the excuse of only having 4 classes at launch.
