Warriors of Chaos Finally Reworked in Time for Warhammer III Immortal Empires

Andrew 2 years ago

The Warriors of Chaos faction is among the oldest factions in the Total War: Warhammer franchise, originally releasing as a preorder bonus for the original Total War: Warhammer, a move that was met with some controversy at the time.

Since then, the Warriors of Chaos have not received many updates, and while other races were reworked and improved, particularly over the lifespan of Total War: Warhammer II, the Warriors of Chaos were left behind, with no new DLCs, updates or faction mechanics for them.

However this is going to change very soon, on August 23rd alongside the release of Immortal Empires and the Champions of Chaos DLC, the Warriors of Chaos will finally be getting an overhaul to their mechanics.

Warhammer III Warriors of Chaos Rework Explained

The first important change is that the Warriors of Chaos will no longer be a single faction. Unlike in Warhammer II's Mortal Empires campaign where the three Chaos Legendary Lords of Archaon the Everchosen, Sigvald the Magnificent and Kholek Suneater all worked together to destroy civilization under the same banner, these lords will now have their own faction, and work towards their own aims independently of one another.

On the topic of the Warriors of Chaos factions, Be'lakor will also be made playable as a starting Legendary Lord with his own faction in Immortal Empires, starting on the island of Albion. The four new DLC lords in the Champions of Chaos DLC are also considered a part of the Warriors of Chaos race, and will share mostly the same mechanics as the aforementioned lords and factions.

With these basic changes out of the way, let us now move onto the changes to the faction mechanics for the Warriors of Chaos.

Warhammer III Warriors of Chaos New Faction Mechanics

All of the Warriors of Chaos factions (there will be eight to choose from if you also buy the Champions of Chaos DLC) will benefit from completely reworked campaign mechanics in Immortal Empires.

Winning battles as the Warriors of Chaos will earn a new special currency, not too dissimilar to the Food currency used by the Skaven. For these factions though, we won't earn Food, we will earn Souls. You will be able to spend these Souls to earn the favor of an individual Chaos God, or the Undivided favor or all four Gods. You can earn powerful bonuses for your faction with this mechanic, such as casualty replenishment rate, buffs to the combat stats of certain units, or extra units in your recruitment pool.

Some settlements on the Immortal Empires campaign map will be of special significance. Capturing them (yes, the Warriors of Chaos are now a settled race, not a horde) will allow you to construct a Dark Fortress there. You can also capture the Dark Fortress in the homeland of a Norscan faction, which will enable you to vassalize the associated Norscan faction for as long as you control that fortress.

The Warriors of Chaos will also have another powerful ability - they will be able to recruit their units instantly and at full strength, utilizing the new Warband mechanic.

You will be able to upgrade your mortal forces over time, sacrificing their experience rank to transform them to a more powerful unit type. This way, you can eventually upgrade a simple Maurauder unit to a unit of Chaos Knights, for example. If you favour a more monstrous army, you can instead upgrade them to Chaos Spawn. You will also be able to dedicate a unit to a specific Chaos God, granting them additional bonuses.

Similarly, you will be able to dedicate your Lords and Heroes to a specific Chaos God, unlocking new abilities for them based on which alignment you choose. You will even be able to upgrade your Lords to a Daemon Prince by spending Souls.

In addition to these new mechanics, the Warriors of Chaos will have access to new units and heroes, as well as variants of these that are marked by one of the Chaos Gods.

Note that some of these features will be toned down if you do not own the Champions of Chaos DLC.
