How to fix Total War: Warhammer 3 crashes with Nvidia Geforce cards

Having issues with Total War: Warhammer 3 crashing or freezing while you are playing? For most players the Warhammer 3 Immortal Empires campaign runs great, but sometimes it can happen that players actually have trouble with the game not working correctly.

In our case we started having issues with our graphics card that caused crashes in Warhammer 3.

Updating the Graphics Driver, a good or bad idea?

Keeping your GPU driver up to date is often the best choice and can prevent you from experiencing crashes. However, it might not always be the best choice.

In our case the game was actually running without any issues until we updated to a new version of the GeForce Game Ready Driver 516.94 which released on the 8th September 2022. We are using a RTX 3090 graphics card in our computer.

After the update we experienced random freezes and complete crashes. The only thing we could do is restart the computer completely because the whole screen froze.

How to fix the freezes and crashes in Warhammer 3

We actually had to revert back to the previous version (516.59) of the Geforce Driver to prevent the crashes and freezes from happening. Make your way to the Nvidia Driver Search page and manually search for your graphics card.

Once you selected your card you can see that the previous versions of the driver is also listed. Pick the one version you had no problems with and download the driver. Now all you have to do is reinstall the downloaded version. Make sure to skip the driver version that caused all the crashes and freezes and only update once another newer one is released.

Update: Deactivate Nvidia Geforce Experience Shadowplay

Shadowplay from Geforce Experience is also often responsible for crashing games. Try deactivating instant replay. We managed to stop crashes by disabling it. Some driver versions handle Shadowplay and instant replay well, some don't.
