Welcome, today we are going to take a look at how you can solve the moon puzzle in the Defiled Temple (Goblin Camp) in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Solving the puzzle will get you into the next important area, the Selunite Outpost in the Underdark where the Nightsong Quest takes place.

In my case I actually needed to solve the puzzle because it was my only way out of the Goblin camp without going through the front door where over two dozen Goblins were waiting to kill my group.

First, split up your group and move them out of the way, otherwise they will just bother you by walking over the plates.

The solution to solving this moon puzzle is to move them in the following order:

  • 2 x top
  • 1 x right
  • 3 x top
  • 3 x left
  • 3 x bottom
  • 2 x left

Once you have solved the puzzle in the Defiled Temple in Baldur’s Gate 3 a door will open and lead you into the next area, the Selunite Outpost. This is where the Underdark begins. Walk down the stairs and go to the right side to unlock the waypoint "Underdark - Selunite Outpost". Now you can travel in and out of here without going through the front door in the Goblin camp or continue your journey into the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3.

The clues in the Priestess Journal

To get the journal on how to solve the moon puzzle you will have to fight the Ogre Polma, the Priestess bodyguard and the Priestess herself True Soul Gut if she is also already in the room.

The journal says the following:

“Thus the interlocking circles will bring the full moons to match the stars, while casting darkness where it belongs at the bottom.

That chasm to the Underdark will stay sealed. I confess the design is not foolproof to outsiders, but I had to sacrifice complexity for material resilience. I’ve always wondered why Selune took me from the Hall of Wonders to serve at this temple as a priestess. Perhaps this was the reason.”

How to get to the moon puzzle room before talking to High Priestess True Soul Gut

You can actually enter the room before you talk to High Priestess True Soul Gut in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can use the jump function to get into her room and then lockpick the door. With this tactic you can fight her bodyguard the Ogre Polma alone and then move down into the moon puzzle room.

Opening the door without solving the moon puzzle

Baldur’s Gate 3 players can also bypass the puzzle and still unlock the door. However, you will need very high perception. If you move your party towards the door at the end of the room, you will notice that your group members do a perception check. If the perception check succeeds a level will be revealed.

Locked! You will notice that the lever locks and the door won’t open. Use a Thieves Tool on the lock, this will free it and the door will open.

Can I get back up once I go down the ladder after solving the moon puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3?

After solving the moon puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can go through the door and down a ladder into the next area, but can you get back up?

Once you are down you will see that the ladder is still there and that means you can go back up into the defiled temple to continue your crusade against the goblins.
