How to Unlock Fortunes of War in Vermintide 2

How to Unlock Fortunes of War in Vermintide 2

The Back to Ubersreik DLC for Warhammer: Vermintide 2 contains a somewhat hidden set of puzzles that some players don't even notice, however completing these puzzles unlocks an entirely new level - Fortunes of War.

Fortunes of War is a challenging wave-encounter level that many players like to test their mettle against as they become more experienced in the game.

Each of the three main Back to Ubersreik levels contain a puzzle that you need to solve. Upon solving it, a hidden room will open, and the room contains a dwarfen rune. Transcribing all three of these runes will unlock Fortunes of War. This guide will explain how to uncover all three runes.

How to Find the Rune in Horn of Magnus

When playing through Horn of Magnus normally, you may have noticed suspicious blocks hidden around the level. Pressing the blocks doesn't seem to do anything, besides initiate a voiceover from Olesya. These blocks are actually the key to solving the puzzle.

You need to push five of the blocks as you progress through the level, however you must push the correct ones. Pushing any incorrect blocks will prevent you from finding the rune, and you will have to start over.

The first block that you need to press is located early on in the level, just before you head up the stairs into the military garrison. Instead of going up the stairs, turn right. You will enter what seems to be a dead end. There are some crates stacked up next to the right hand wall. The block is hidden behind these crates. You may need to crouch and reposition yourself a little bit for the Push prompt to show up.

After progressing through the pig pens and crossing the walkway on your way out of that area, you will see an archway with a large cart to the left. To the left of the cart, there is another stack of crates, and behind the crates is the second block.

The third block is quite nearby. Rather than going through the archway, follow the alleyway to the right of it. When the path forks, turn right, and you will find an open basement door. Go into the basement, turn right and you will find a room that is mostly hidden behind some overgrown shrubbery, The third block is inside this room.

After pushing this block, you can continue progressing through the level as normal for a while. Complete the barrel event (where you blow up the gate) and go into the Plaza. Turn left immediately after entering the Plaza, until you reach the edge. There is a ledge which can be reached by jumping on some boxes, and then up onto the ledge. You can then jump around the corner by going to the very edge of the ledge, and jumping to the left onto a very small ledge. Then carefully go to the other side, and drop down. There is also a Tome there, and the block just behind the tome is the one you need to push.

The fifth and final block is a little further on in the level, inside the inn. Inside the inn on the ground floor, there is a bar. You can find the block on the right side of the bar.

After pushing all five of these blocks, assuming nobody pressed an incorrect one, Olesya should say something about a path being opened. You then need to go back the way you came, outside the inn and back down the stairs. There is a white banner, and below this a small gate will have opened. Go through the gate and follow the passage, and you will find the rune.

Then simply transcribe the rune by holding E. After doing that, you just need to finish the rest of the level as usual to take the rune back to Taal's Horn Keep.

How to Find the Rune in Garden of Morr

This one is a bit less complicated and you can't mess it up by choosing the wrong option.

Progress through the level as normal for a while, until you reach a large open courtyard, just before the crypts. There is a Strange Skull sitting on an altar in front of one of the tombs. Interact with the skull to turn it.

After doing this, you need to quickly light four candles situated around the courtyard area. If you run out of time, all the candles you lit will extinguish, but you can start again as many times as needed until you get it right.

To find the first candle, go down the alley behind and to the left of the skull, then turn left. Follow the path and you will see the candle on the ground.

Next, jump over the fence back into the courtyard, The candle will be on top of a small gravestone to your right.

The third candle is back in the area just before the courtyard, near the ammo box. Between some hedgerows there is a stone column with some skulls on it. The candle is also on there.

The final candle is on the far side of the courtyard, also sitting on a stone column.

If you lit all four of them quickly enough, Olesya will say something about a door opening. Go back to the strange skull, and you will see that the tomb behind it has opened. Inside a Gargoyle Head is on the ground. Someone needs to pick this up and carry it through the majority of the level. You can drop it at any time if you need to fight, just be careful not to throw it into an inaccessible area.

Carry the Gargoyle Head until just before you reach the final spiral staircase that heads up to the end event of the level. Instead of ascending the staircase, look to the right of it. There is a "window" on the right wall that you can drop through, onto a ledge below.

When you have dropped down, look around for a headless Gargoyle statue. Put the head in its place on the statue, and a door will open on the ledge below you.

Jump down and go through the door, follow the passage until you reach the rune. Then transcribe the rune and finish the level as normal.

How to Find the Rune in Engines of War

Begin progressing through the level as normal, until you reach the cave. Once inside the cave, stick to the left wall and you will eventually come across a small hidden exit to the cave. Go through and you will enter a closed off outdoors area. On the left of this area, there are some rocks that you can jump up, which will take you to an altar on top of the cave.

There is a torch on the altar, and one of your party members will need to carry it through part of the level.

Keep carrying the torch until you reach the area with the hollowed log, and a watchtower to the right of it. You will need to jump up to the watchtower, which you can do by turning right, jumping onto the log, then onto the flagpost, and then onto the ledge. Follow the path and enter the watchtower.

Throw the torch into the hearth by weapon swapping or performing some other action that drops the torch. This can be a bit finicky and you might have to try a few times for the torch to actually fall into the fireplace.

Once this is done, look on the table behind you, you will see three figurines. You need to memorise which figurines are there, and in which order they appear, from left to right. Its probably a good idea to simply take a screenshot, as you will need this information later.

Now progress through the level as normal, until you reach the courtyard. Just before exiting the courtyard (up the final steps, just before the archway), turn back towards the stairs. There is a small ledge covered in vines on the left. Jump up to the ledge,  progress along it and then jump over the path to the far side. In this area, you will find large versions of the statues you saw earlier.

There are five statues here. You need to interact with the three that you saw on the table, and in the order that they were positioned. If you choose the wrong one, you will fail the puzzle.

Upon choosing the correct statues in the correct order, Olesya will say something and a hidden doorway will open near the final statue (near where the tome is located). Go through the door, follow the passage and transcribe the rune, then finish the level as normal.

Once you have completed all of the steps in this guide, you can enter the Fortunes of War level at any time from Taal's Horn Keep, by interacting with the Dwarfen Lodestone to the right of the Bridge of Shadows.

We hope you found this guide about the Back to Ubersreik runes in Vermintide 2 useful.
